Skylar Lee Dawson grew up in Scarsdale, New York, and is the youngest child of in his family and only boy. He follows an older sister ten years older than him, and triplet sisters seven years older than him. He wasn't a mistake like some people seem to assume. He was the last try of his parents for a son, and they were over the moon when he arrived. Understandably, his parents needed to wait awhile after having three boisterous girls on their hands with the triplets, and once Skylar got old enough to realised he was surrounded by big sisters, it didn't take long for the penny to drop that he was very much going to be the black sheep and the odd one out.
Still, they were a pretty close family, though there was some sibling rivalry issues with the sisters that Skylar preferred to stay out of. His sisters got loud and scary when they argued, and he had more fun with his best friend and nextdoor neighbour from childhood, Lyle. Skylar and Lyle were inseparable until the age of 14 when Lyle and his family relocated to Canada. They kept in touch by text and email initially, but when Lyle got a girlfriend around the time of his 15th birthday, communication began to drop off. Irked, Skylar sent Lyle a text and told him to go fuck himself, and they haven't spoken since.
Skylar was a bit of an all-rounder sort of kid. He liked sports, but he also enjoyed music where he played sax for the school band in high school. When he was a kid, he wanted to do dance classes like all his sisters had, not wanting to miss out. Even though they thought he would hate it once he started, his parents still wanted to give him equal opportunities to his sisters, and he ended up loving it. He's been in classes ever since and it led to him scoring a part in the chorus line of the recent reprisal of Footloose: The Musical on Broadway. His private school in New York City had set the auditions up for any kids talented kids with an interest in professional performing. Skylar never expected to get the part, but he thought it was an awesome experience once he did. He has a lot of friends, and he's a pretty social guy when he has the time, but mostly his focus is on getting good grades to get into a performing arts program for college, and working on the show.
Though recently, Skylar's world has been shaken up. Now 17, it was just a couple of months after his 16th birthday that the family got news that Skylar's dad had stomach cancer and he has been undergoing chemotherapy ever since. It's been hard on Skylar, because he and his dad are a team as the only males in their family. They had always been close, and having the Big C hanging over them has been a hell of an ordeal. His dad is still fighting it the best he can, and he hasn't been told he's terminal, but there is always the risk he won't make it through. Skylar threw himself even moreso into work and started to work himself into the ground studying. It has lead to him being exhausted and losing focus one day rehearsing at the theatre and he ended up slipping, breaking his ankle when he became stage roadkill.
He's pissed at himself for the mistake, but he knows the group who work on the show are like family so he won't be completely turned out in the cold because he's injured. He's just not sure what he would do if he didn't have the work to think about and only had worrying about his dad dying to fill his empty hours. Skylar's a nice guy, very personable and friendly. He's never really dated beyond asking a girl to junior prom, but doesn't feel there's a void in his life without a girlfriend or boyfriend like his friends have. He can't deny, however, that seeing people at work or school having fun dating that he really would like to give it a shot sooner rather than later.
